[more...] Legionellosis: The Facts A 2003 UK Study highlighted serious problems with spa pools being a cause of Legionnaires' disease because they are not managed or maintained properly. During 2003, there were 27 cases of Legionnaires' disease in England where spa pools were identified as the source of infection. Legionnaires' disease is a bacterial disease that may cause pneumonia. The majority of cases are reported as single (sporadic) cases but outbreaks can occur. The disease is spread through the air from a water source. Person to person spread does not occur. Breathing in aerosols from a contaminated water system is the most likely route of transmission. Flocculents are used in pool maintenance activities. The chemical compound is added to some sand filters as an aid in filtration. A foaming gelatinous mass, called the floc, is created on top of the filter bed which traps finer particles that might normally pass thorough the sand. Also referred to as aggregation. Alum is a common flocculate. (The Complete Swimming Pool Reference 1994) Machinery room: a room in which a refrigeration system is permanently installed and operated. This does not include a cold-storage room in which evaporators are located, a refrigerator box, an air-cooled space, or any other enclosed space subject to B52-05 (Clause 6.2). A Class T machinery room is one that is subject to specific restrictions and requirements (Clause 6.3) (The Mechanical Refrigeration Code B52-05) Terry's Road Tips O.R.F.A.'s Technical Director travels around Canada and the United States delivering dynamic training programs. As Terry moves on to the next location he packs away little nuggets of wisdom from these well-seasoned operators. Terry shares the following tips. Remember that these tips may not be effective for everyone but they are good examples of how operators continue to find innovative solutions to the task at hand. We hope to continue to share your ideas and tips - direct submissions to tpiche@orfa.com Dasherboard Maintenance To quickly check the dasherboards for imperfections, loose screws or plastic movement, Cut a 2" x 2" to fit between the bottom kicker plate and the top sill band. Run the 2" x 2" along the dasher boards and it will help to quickly identify any problems with your boards. Ice Thickness To determine ice thickness, after conducting an inspection of the ice surface, one practitioner rigged a drill bit to drill a ¼ inch hole down to the surface. At the 1½ inch depth of the drill bit a separate cutting blade was attached, which cut a hole 1 ½ inches in circumference into the ice [almost like a counter sink hole]. This larger hole identifies the extra ice that needs to be cut away as the driver performs the ice maintenance. Operators can quickly monitor their success without taking away too much ice or having to constantly re-drill. |
