Ontario Parks Association and Ontario Recreation Facilities Association Form a New Joint Parks and Public Spaces Training and Development Authority
The Boards of Directors of the Ontario Parks Association (OPA) and the Ontario Recreation Facilities Association (O.R.F.A.) have given the direction for both Associations to jointly provide needed services to professionals in the Recreation Facilities and Parks profession. It gives us great pride to announce the start of a joint venture between the O.R.F.A. and the O.P.A.. Both Associations have developed a collaboration to better serve the needs of both memberships. The Canadian Recreation Facilities Council Inc. (C.R.F.C.) is excited to announce that through the collaborative efforts of its 13 Provincial/Territorial (P/T) member associations, which represents in excess of 10,000 recreation professionals, that it has selected the Ontario Recreation Facilities Association to be the administrative national voice for recreation facilities. Aquatic Facility Training Needs Assessment
The Ontario Recreation Facilities Association (O.R.F.A.) and Canadian Red Cross - Ontario Zone are evaluating aquatic facility training needs in the Province of Ontario. Your feedback is very important to us. In exchange for your efforts, we will place your name in a random draw for a $100 gift certificate and include a copy of O.R.F.A.'s Aquatic Facility Logbook. O.R.F.A. and Red Cross are working in collaboration to review both existing training opportunities, as well as establishing new competency based aquatic facility training for the future. Alleged Telemarketing Scam: First Aid Kits - The WSIB has been receiving calls from employers indicating they have been contacted by a firm selling first aid kits, allegedly claiming that employers are at risk for fines if they do not purchase a first aid kit from the company. While all Ontario employers are required to provide and maintain first aid facilities at their worksites, the WSIB does not endorse first aid kits being offered by any particular supplier. Employers may assemble the required items to build their own first aid kit or may purchase a ready-made kit from the vendor of their choice. [more…]

Confined space - The Confined Space Regulations came into force on September 30, 2006. The Ministry of Labour has published The Confined Space Guideline (09/06) to provide workplace parties with guidance on the requirements of the confined space provisions in the regulations under the OHSA. ARENAS: Reducing operating times can save energy The relatively simple measures of shutting down, heating, ventilation and lighting equipment at night and other times of non-occupancy, and modifying the set points of equipment such as circulating pumps and ventilation systems will reduce energy costs significantly. POOL Winterizing : Properly store any unused chemicals as described on their labels to prevent containers from breaking and the mixing of potentially incompatible chemicals. Dispose of test reagents, disinfectants, and other chemicals that will lose their potency over the winter. (National Swimming Pool Foundation)

What's your plan?
The following definitions are taken from Managing Sport Facilities. Fried, Gil. c.2005. and are related to the operation and management of sport facilities and may not suit every organizational structure

Business Plan – the road map for any facility that helps identify the product and market as well as the legal and financial outlook.
Functional Plan – a plan that helps define what operational plan will try to accomplish; includes marketing or safety plans.
Operational Plan – highlights what specific steps are required for accomplishing either a strategic or a functional plan.
Strategic Plan – focus on trying to achieve the facility’s strategic goals; is often called the master plan

What is OHS orientation? Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) orientation are activities that help employees and others get familiar with a workplace's health and safety program. It also identifies hazards a worker, visitor, or contractor/customer may be exposed to at the workplace. [more…]
