Instructor: Terry Piche, CIT, Technical Director, Ontario Recreation Facilities Association Inc.

The ORFA and the Frank Cowan Company Limited have partnered to present this one-day risk awareness and liability reduction workshop. The focus will be in sharing real legal outcomes from events that have impacted communities while providing proven tools that have been put in place, or to assist in assessing current risk reduction tools and strategies. Additional information will reconfirm the importance of actions such as proactive inspection and ongoing maintenance of recreation infrastructure. Even if you currently have a risk management program in place, this session is sure to bring something new to your attention, or encourage you to improve your current program.

Topics include:

A playground equipment maintenance program does not have to always involve certification of frontline staff – having well informed competent staff to inspect and take appropriate action is the true key to reducing risk and avoiding liability

  • Parking lots – liability avoidance
  • Walking and biking trails – know what is expected as a safe environment
  • Alcohol consumption in public areas – what is really at risks
  • Soccer and ball fields – the important of a quality inspection and maintenance plan
  • The importance of waivers

Who should attend; politicians, board members, supervisors and frontline staff will all gain a better understanding of what the courts expect when the public is invited to use or access to recreation grounds, open space, and buildings.
