RESOURCE HIGHLIGHT
O.R.F.A.'s Suggested Guidelines for Refrigeration Plant Maintenance 2004 The Operating Engineers regulation requires that owners/operators of any registered unattended refrigeration plant develop and implement a maintenance program. To ensure the safety of the public and staff, it is required that owners/users of these refrigeration plants clearly understand and comply with the requirements as prescribed by the Operating Engineers Regulation 219/01 and the CSA B52 Mechanical Refrigeration Code 2005. It is therefore the responsibility of the owner/operator to develop a maintenance program to at least include the manufacturer maintenance and service recommendations and to ensure such recommendations are performed. Legionnaires Disease -There has been an outbreak of legionnaires' disease linked to a long-term care home in Toronto in September 2005 affecting residents, staff and visitors. Workers and residents were affected. The Ministry of Labour is releasing this information bulletin to remind employers of their obligations to protect the health and safety of workers, provide information about legionnaires' disease and re-affirm expectations of employers and workers.[more]
Hurricane Hazel -It was a wild summer for weather in Ontario and around the world. As October is upon us we look back on the anniversary of Hurricane Hazel (October 14, 1954) Toronto has learned the lessons of Hurricane Hazel well. Twenty-five years later, the courses of seven rivers have been changed, huge dams and reservoirs control water levels and a multi-million dollar master plan governs the flow of every river and stream. After Hurricane Hazel the Metropolitan Toronto and Region Conservation Authority was established to control water levels and purchase land in flood hazard areas. Raymore Park was then dedicated in memory of Hurricane Hazel's many victims and survivors. The TRCA now owns 32,000 acres and serves approximately one third of Ontario's population. TECH TIPS
Buildings:
CEREAMIC FLOORS AND GROUT STAINS: Mould/mildew stains in shower stalls and urine stains under urinals can be managed by: protecting grout with penetrating sealer*; washing floors daily with germicidal detergent solution and by scrubbing problem areas with rigid nylon hand brush; washing floors weekly or monthly with germicidal solution and rigid nylon brush or cylindrical type brush (machine). (*Check with the manufacturer on what type of sealer to be used and how best to apply it. A time of no less than 12-hours or maybe as long as 24-hours should be given to ensure tiles are completely dry. Be sure to try a small area to ensure that the sealer will function well.)
Pools:
Pool water is a matter of personal preference. Customers are the first to complain if the water is not warm enough. Remember that the warmer the water the more sweat is secreted by the users and the therefore more contamination of the pool water. Temperatures range from 70-90 F depending on the use of the pool. Try to keep the air temperature no greater than 2F above the temperature of the pool water.
