REMINDER TO MEMBERS
Recreational Water Illnesses
Aquatic Facility Operations -
Ontario outdoor public pool operators need to be
particularly diligent during the summer months with regard
to regular testing of pool water. Test for bacteriological
indicator organisms such as total coliforms and E. coli.
Test for a build-up of total dissolved solids, which may
indicate a condition that renders the disinfectant
ineffective. Continued use of stabilized chlorine through
the summer months can result in a build-up of cyanuric acid
that results in a condition called "chlorine lock". Although
not specifically required by legislation, ORFA recommends
that operators consider testing for bacteriological
indicator organisms in outdoor pools on a weekly basis.

be completed within 60 days of the commencement of their employment at
the licensed establishment. In Ontario, the AGCO Board-approved server

TECH TIPS
Energy Efficiency
Question: Is the garage door closed while the resurfacer is dumping
snow?
Consider instituting a procedure to close door while resurfacer is
dumping snow. Consider installing an automatic door opener with a motion
sensor to automatically close after a certain period of inactivity.
Question:
Is your snow pit melted manually with hot or warm water?
Consider using cold water to manually melt snow.
TERMINOLOGY
In "Terms" of Facilities -
Terms, phrases and definitions relevant to your operation…
POOL MAINTENANCE
Disinfection:
The process of treating water with a chemical disinfectant for a
specified time period in order to destroy or otherwise inactivate
pathogenic organisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa
Free Available Chlorine Residual (FAC)
The Chlorine present
as ionized and unionized Hypochlorous Acid (the principal
disinfectant in a chlorinated pool). The Chlorine is not combined
with any other substances (free), available
for disinfection/oxidation, and present as a stable residual
because the initial Chlorine Demand of the pool water has been
satisfied. (ORFA)
Superchlorination:
The rapid elevation of the Free Available Chlorine concentration
in pool water to achieve a specific purpose, e.g. algae control,
oxidation of organic material, disinfection of Chlorine-resistant
pathogens, breakpoint Chlorination. (ORFA)
Chlorine lock:
Continued use of stabilized chlorine through the summer
months can result in a build-up of cyanuric acid that results
in a condition called "chlorine lock". (ORFA)
RWIs:
RWIs are illnesses that are spread by swallowing, breathing, or
having contact with contaminated water from swimming pools, spas,
lakes, rivers, or oceans. Recreational water illnesses can cause a
wide variety of symptoms, including gastrointestinal, skin, ear,
respiratory, eye, neurologic and wound infections. The most commonly
reported RWI is diarrhea.
Diarrheal illnesses can be caused by germs such as
Crypto, short for
Cryptosporidium,
Giardia,
Shigella,
norovirus and
E. coli
