MINISTRY OF LABOUR INDUSTRIAL PROGRAM BLITZ 2008-2009

Ministry of Labour inspectors will check for electrical hazards during a blitz of industrial workplaces in November. Inspectors will take a “zero tolerance” approach to any contraventions found under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations.

The increased enforcement is part of the province’s Safe At Work Ontario strategy, launched in June 2008.

Generally the blitz is to last for a period of two weeks in the allocated months. Though the main focus for the blitz is on electrical hazards, in all industrial sectors, the inspectors may also be monitoring for other workplace hazards.  The inspectors should also be insuring that Health and Safety Representatives or Joint Health and Safety Committees are in place where appropriate and that they are functioning as required.  [more...]

GET ENERGYWISE THIS SEASON!

ORFA members are encouraged to review the patterns of energy consumption directly related to arena operations. Many of the ice-in procedures for our industry were developed at a time when electrical costs were not an issue and some inefficient practices have been passed along to the next generation of ice makers. Updating your operational practices will save energy and help to provide optimal ice quality. Facility energy management requires firm commitment by all facility staff. Start now and work towards operational efficiencies and lowering costs. Review ORFA’s new resource Energy Efficient Arenas: It’s in our Power. [more…] and see how you can be part of the solution.

TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR FLOOD: IT MAKES $EN$E

TECH TIPS

Ice Edger (Rust prevention/storage tips)

The edger owners manual will identify how best to store the equipment when not in use. The equipment should be stored away from public access areas. The equipment should be washed down after use. Spraying a light coat of oil onto the equipment can help reduce rusting and keep the equipment in proper working order. Consider covering the unit with a canvas tarp. Canvas will allow the unit to breath where plastic may promote rusting. [Source: CIT Program ORFA 2008]

Energy Tip Floating Head Pressure Controls
Floating head pressure controls adjust condensing temperatures in the refrigeration system in response to varying outdoor temperatures. These controls allow the head pressure to vary depending on the outside air conditions. Floating the pressure to reflect actual conditions reduces the operating pressure of the compressor and saves energy. When head pressure floats, the evaporative condenser fan operates continuously instead of cycling on and off. Although this consumes more condenser fans energy, it is more than compensated by the much larger decrease in compressor energy use. Consult with a refrigeration expert familiar with floating head pressure prior to attempting such changes. [Source: Energy Efficienct Arenas: It’s in our power, ORFA 2008]

TERMINOLOGY
In "Terms" of Facilities - Terms, phrases and definitions relevant to your operation…

Geothermal Heat Exchange: takes advantage of the ground's heating and cooling properties (the same properties that make any basement cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter) to heat or cool entire buildings. This heat 'exchange' between the ground and the building is accomplished by using standard pump and compressor technology.

Heat Loss: A calculation of the total amount of heat required by a building, considering insulation levels of walls, ceilings and windows, number of occupants, geographic location, soil type and many other factors. The process also calculates the heat gain of the building to determine the summer cooling loadGeothermal

Heat Sink: The use of soil or water to accept heat that is rejected from the building (to provide cooling).
