WORKING ALONE
Currently, Ontario does not have a specific regulation concerned with "working alone" although the Regulation for Industrial Establishments specifies a minimum number of workers for some hazardous work such as confined space entry or working on live electrical conductors. Instead, reliance is placed on the employer's general duty to take all reasonable precautions for the health and safety of the worker, as specified in the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Section 25(2) (h). The OHSA is founded on the principle of internal responsibility and is the primary force for health and safety in the workplace.

It is recommended that a job hazard analysis be performed to determine the level of risk and exposure to the suspected hazard. After having done this, appropriate controls can than be put in place by eliminating the hazard, or preventing it from harming the operator or attendant. Attached is some general information that will assist you with hazard recognition, assessment and control for your operation. By working with your JHSC along with affected staff and performing a job hazard analysis (as suggested) you will be demonstrating due diligence and making every effort to protect the safety of workers.

Bill 168 which received royal assent in Dec 2009. Employers now have until June 15, 2010 to become compliant with the new changes to the Occupational Health and Safety Act (“OHSA”). The amendments to the OHSA impose new duties on employers to address violence and harassment in the workplace in the form of policies, programs, risk assessments, and the provision of information to workers where a person has a history of violence. The primary change made after its final reading was the removal of a duty to investigate, deal with and report threats of workplace violence.

TECH TIPS

Pool Tip

Troubleshooting Filters
A properly designed and operated pool filtration and circulation system will dilute and flush all areas of the pool equally and will mechanically remove insoluble solid matter from the water. The filtration and circulation systems also provide for equal distribution of cleansed water to all areas of the pool. Troubleshooting filters does not involve electricity or moving parts unless there is an automatic backwashing system installed. It may, however, necessitate the release of air pressure in a pressure system. (National Swimming Pool Foundation Prevention Advisor March 2010)

Lighting Tip

Daylighting
If used properly, daylight can provide the bulk of the illumination required. Desks or work areas should be situated such that light comes from the side. This minimizes glare, veils reflections on the task and eliminates the problem of people working in their own shadow. The benefits of natural daylight should be balanced against security concerns and the cost of cooling heat generated by the sunlight. (SaskPower)
